Without getting too abstract here, capital only exists because capital exists, people only spend it because other people spend it because the notion of profit is entirely self-perpetuating in nature. And when it exists within a system, it very rapidly becomes the lifeblood of that system: it must always be flowing for the system to survive in its current iteration.
But the people within the system will always do what is profitable, and with the accumulation of wealth, people are able to become very powerful indeed, enough that actions which are harmful to the society are not out of the question, and if it is profitable, then those I power will support it. Why do you think slavery persisted for so long in the capitalist US? Why do you think Chinese wage slaves were sacrificed by the thousands to build the very same railroads that "capitalism gave us"? Why do you think the US is so deeply involved in the resource-rich Middle East rather than the resource-poor North Korea and Cuba (both of which pose a greater threat than Afghanistan and Iraq)?
The answer of course, is profit. Whatever is profitable will be done, which often involves the mass production of cheaper, adequate products rather than expensive high quality ones. If you want an example, look to the modern fast food industry which has not only created an entirely new group of working class individuals, but also lowered the average American life expectancy by several years, all in the name of profit and convenience.
People have become slaves to capital, and to the "free market".
